Cyclone Ditwah displaced families across the Nuwara Eliya district. The window in which help matters
most after a cyclone is short, and it closes before most international appeals have finished
fundraising.
Five hundred people were supported with dry rations, school books and medicine, staged from a local
school hall and distributed by people who knew which households had lost what.
This is the case for an endowment in one photograph. Relief only works if the money is already
there. A fund that has to raise before it can give arrives after the need has passed.
